Siler City Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Marks a Major Step Forward for Community Health and Development

Dsc 0381Yesterday, representatives from McGill joined local officials for the groundbreaking of Siler City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) expansion, a critical project aimed at enhancing local infrastructure to support both population growth and industrial development. This expansion is expected to significantly impact the lives of Siler City residents by ensuring improved water quality, expanding capacity for wastewater management, and contributing to regional economic growth.

Transformative Impact on Siler City’s Infrastructure and Quality of Life

With Siler City experiencing a surge in both residential and industrial growth, the existing wastewater treatment plant was quickly reaching its capacity limits. The expansion, spearheaded by McGill in close collaboration with the Town of Siler City, will double the plant’s capacity from 2 million gallons per day (MGD) to 4 MGD. This increase in capacity will accommodate current demands and future developments, benefiting major local projects such as Mountaire Farms, the Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing Site, and Little Rhino.

Dsc 0414The upgraded WWTP will incorporate advanced technologies designed to enhance nutrient removal, including a phased isolation oxidation ditch nutrient removal system. This system, chosen for its efficiency and cost-effectiveness, allows Siler City to reduce nitrogen output and meet North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) standards. With these upgrades, residents can expect a cleaner, healthier environment that safeguards local waterways, preserving the natural landscape for generations to come.

McGill’s Essential Role in Engineering and Environmental Compliance

McGill’s involvement in this project has been crucial from planning through permitting and now into construction. McGill conducted a detailed feasibility study, presenting Siler City with multiple options for achieving the best outcomes in wastewater management. After careful evaluation, the Town selected McGill’s recommendation for an oxidation ditch system, which balances affordability with high efficiency. This advanced solution was designed to navigate the specific site constraints while delivering top-notch water treatment for the community.

In addition to providing engineering expertise, McGill facilitated permitting processes with NCDEQ, resulting in the issuance of a Special Order by Consent (SOC). This SOC allows Siler City to distribute flow allocations efficiently as construction continues, ensuring continuous service to the community despite the ongoing infrastructure work.

A Commitment to Sustainable Growth and Economic Prosperity

Dsc 0376The expanded WWTP aligns with Siler City’s broader goals of sustainable growth, offering benefits that extend beyond environmental improvements. With the expanded facility, Siler City is positioned to attract new industries and businesses, which translates to more jobs and a stronger local economy. The infrastructure upgrade supports the Town’s plans for the Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing Site, fostering industrial growth while ensuring that Siler City maintains the resources needed to handle increased wastewater demand responsibly.

McGill’s Dedication to Community-Focused Infrastructure Projects

McGill’s involvement underscores its commitment to empowering communities through resilient infrastructure. Known for our collaborative approach, McGill has worked closely with Siler City officials to secure essential funding and address technical challenges. The project’s $62 million budget, supported by USDA Rural Development grants and additional funding avenues, reflects McGill’s success in acquiring financial backing that benefits the community without overextending local budgets.

Dsc 0387This groundbreaking marks an exciting new phase in Siler City’s development journey, positioning the town for a sustainable, prosperous future. Thanks to McGill’s leadership and dedication, Siler City residents will soon experience the tangible benefits of improved wastewater treatment—a cleaner environment, reliable infrastructure, and enhanced quality of life!
