Making the Most of a Career Fair

Career fairs are designed to help students explore career opportunities and connect directly with organizations. Whether you are looking for an internship or an entry-level position after graduation, these events provide valuable insights into the different disciplines within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. For many students, a career fair can be the first step toward defining a professional path.

At McGill, we view career fairs as an investment in the next generation of professionals. They give us an opportunity to share our story, showcase our culture and projects, and build meaningful connections with students who may one day become part of our team.

The Basics

First impressions matter. When meeting employers, maintain eye contact, present yourself professionally, and be prepared to discuss your interests and career goals. Having a general idea of the type of work or discipline that excites you will help guide your conversations

Do Your Research

One of the most important things you can do before attending a career fair is research the companies you plan to visit. Review the list of participating employers and spend time learning about their services, areas of expertise, company cultures, and locations.

Explore company websites, social media platforms, and recent projects. Identify one or two projects that stand out to you and be prepared to discuss them. Asking thoughtful questions about a firm’s work shows initiative and genuine interest in the organization. It can also help you have more meaningful conversations with recruiters and other professionals at the event.

Preparing for Internships and Full-Time Roles

If you are approaching graduation, be prepared to discuss your plans and career objectives. Engineering students planning to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam should also be ready to talk about their preparation and anticipated timeline for obtaining Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.

Employers may ask about your geographic preferences for both summer internships and post-graduation employment. Thinking through these considerations in advance will help you communicate your goals clearly and confidently.

Questions Worth Asking

A career fair is not only an opportunity for employers to learn about you. It is also your chance to determine whether a company aligns with your professional goals and interests. Consider asking questions such as:

  • What internship opportunities are available within your organization?
  • What full-time positions are typically available to graduating students?
  • Is the internship experience structured around individual placements or a cohort-based program?
  • Who would I work alongside, and what would my day-to-day responsibilities look like?
  • What software programs and technical tools do your teams commonly use?
  • What qualities do your most successful interns and new hires share?
  • What opportunities are available for mentorship and professional development?
  • How does your company support employees who are pursuing professional licensure and certifications?

Finding the Right Fit

Ultimately, a successful career fair conversation is about more than securing an interview. It is an opportunity to discover where your skills, interests, and career aspirations align with an organization’s culture and opportunities. Take time to ask thoughtful questions, engage in meaningful conversations, and learn about the people behind the company. The goal is to find a workplace that supports your goals and long-term career development.
