Lighting System Improvements for Miller Park in Lynchburg, VA
With the nickname of “Hill City,” Lynchburg, Virginia sits at the feet of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The James River runs through the City, which provides residents and tourists with opportunities for mountain and water-based recreation activities. One place people could recreate in the City is Miller Park.
About Miller Park
Miller Park is nearly 30 acres and has two picnic shelters as well as an aviary building. This park is perfect for weddings, parties, and other events, as there is plenty of covered and open space available. With baseball fields, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, and a playground, this park offers visitors plenty of kid-friendly options. Miller Park also has a pool, which is the only public pool in Lynchburg, and it can be rented out for special occasions. Another cool part about Miller Park is that it is adjacent to the Miller Center, which is the headquarters for the City’s parks and recreation. Inside, there is a Nature Zone environmental center, a 1856-seat theater, a classroom space, and a dance / fitness studio. This is where the parks and recreation staff spend their days and plan the future of recreation in the City.
McGill’s Involvement with the Safety Lighting for Miller Park
With the available amenities, Miller Park is the perfect place for families with children; since it is a great park for kids, it is important that the City ensure safety for all visitors. In the fall of 2024, McGill started working with the City to add advanced security measures, which include lighting and surveillance cameras. One unique aspect of this project is the specific lighting system called Trellix. The lighting system is embedded with the camera fixtures and is designed so that the cameras are connected via cellular network to the City’s cellular system. This allows the cameras to get online at any time. Since everything is embedded, the City will be able to see the cameras and dim or brighten the lights within one system—rather than manually operating separate components. This process will streamline the security processes throughout Miller Park.
This project is 95% complete. The City is currently reviewing the final drawings, and our team is working with Duke Energy to set up accounts. After we get comments from the City, we can take this project to bid. The next step of the project is getting the comments from the City and then taking it to bid.
