Flexibility with Purpose: How McGill’s WorkPlus Program Supports Our People

Hybrid work has become an important strategy for attracting talent, strengthening workplace culture, and maintaining exceptional client service. A 2024 study by Stanford University found that employees who work from home two days per week are just as productive as their fully in-office peers, equally likely to be promoted, and significantly less likely to leave their jobs.

At McGill, our WorkPlus program reflects this approach by providing structured flexibility that supports work-life balance, enhances productivity, and helps recruit and retain talented professionals—while maintaining the collaboration and accountability that define our culture.

A Flexible Approach to Work

Through the WorkPlus program, eligible employees have flexibility in where and how they work. Team members may choose a traditional in-office schedule or a hybrid arrangement that includes three days in the office and two days working remotely. Additional options such as flex-time and compressed schedules are available based on business needs.

While WorkPlus provides flexibility, it is built on strong expectations for performance, communication, and teamwork. Employees are expected to consistently meet project deadlines, maintain clear communication with colleagues and clients, and actively participate in meetings and company initiatives. Even in a hybrid environment, McGill employees remain highly engaged through collaboration, technology, and in-person connection.

Employee Perspectives

For many McGill employees, the program has created meaningful improvements in both productivity and work-life balance.

Collin Selman, Project Engineer, shares that WorkPlus has helped him maintain a healthier balance between work and family life while remaining focused and productive. The flexibility to work from home allows him to better manage personal responsibilities while dedicating uninterrupted time to technical tasks that require deep focus. At the same time, in-office days provide opportunities for collaboration and teamwork. Collin notes that the program reflects McGill’s commitment to supporting employees while strengthening engagement with the team and the communities we serve.

For Taylor Pound, Project Accountant, the greatest impact has been the ability to stay connected with his family while maintaining a productive work schedule. On remote days, he can take his children to school and spend a few extra moments with them during the day while still staying fully engaged in his work. Within the accounting team, the hybrid structure has also improved productivity by creating a natural rhythm between collaborative office days and quieter remote days focused on individual tasks.

Mariah Farris, Grant Administrator, has experienced the value of the program during high-priority deadlines. During the recent Helene grant submissions, the ability to work remotely helped eliminate distractions and allowed her to stay fully focused on completing applications before the deadline. Mariah also notes that the hybrid structure provides the ideal balance between flexibility and collaboration. While remote work offers focus and efficiency, in-office days foster stronger connections with colleagues and keep employees engaged with the team and the work being done across the firm.

Strengthening Service Through Our People

At McGill, we believe that supporting our people ultimately strengthens the service we provide to our clients and communities. By offering structured flexibility while maintaining high standards of performance and collaboration, the WorkPlus program helps position the firm to:

  • Attract and retain talented professionals
  • Sustain high-quality project delivery
  • Encourage employee engagement and growth
  • Strengthen a collaborative, relationship-based culture

Hybrid work, when thoughtfully implemented, is not a compromise. It is a strategic way McGill supports its people while continuing to deliver exceptional service and Shape Communities Together.
